Okay so question. I've been using mozilla thunderbird as my email client. But I'm wondering if there are any other email clients out there that are similar, that can be used by the blind? So if there are, what email clients do you use and why? Which one works best for you?

well, I use windows live mail. it's easier for me. i've been using it for I wanna say a year now and love it. it's almost like outlook express. all I do is if I wanna read an email, just find the email msg, press enter on it, and there you go. NVDA, which is my sr of choice starts reading down the page automaticly. when i'm done, I just press escape and i'm back to where I can find the msg again.

I think they mean pop peeper I checked that out and was unable to download it. As for windows mail already have that and as far as I know it doesn't work offline. You have to go to the hotmail site to check mail. Thanks for the info.

Pop peeper. Windows live mail works. Download it from www.windowslive.com, then look in your programs for Windows live right arrow then you'll find it. Click it on and add your hotmail account to it. It works nicely. Pop peeper might be a bit more of a learning curve www.poppepper.com. I'll bet the windows live mail is already installed. If you have done all I suggest tell me why it does not work?

Are Pegasus and Eudora still around? Both are good pop clients, but neither supports imap or rss. What don't you like about T-bird?

I like thunderbird a lot actually. It just recently started acting up after I updated to the latest vession. As for windows live I'll have to look more into that. So far it just takes me to hotmail so am not sure where to download the windows live mail from. Pop peeper won't dowload at all and I didn't like what I saw there anyway it looked somewhat complex.

i'm a member of the NVDA mailing list, and I do believe that ther was a topic earlier talking about the new tb. I think there is som accessibillity issues that need to be worked out. anyway, yeah, windows live is the best way to go in my appinion.

Yep I'm finding that the new version of thunderbird has some issues so I'm recommending windows live too.

With what screen reader does the new T-Bird have problems, and what are they? When I was a Win user, I had NVDEA and great results with T-Bird 3.0.x.

The biggest problem with all of these clients, apart from Outlook, is that not all the flags with a message (such as read/unread, priority, has attachments etc) are read by screen readers.
NVDA reads most flags correctly in T-bird except "has attachments". This is very annoying since you always have to check on each message whether it has an attachment or not. Apparently this has to do with the Gekko platform on which the T-Bird client is built and I have seen promises that it will be fixed soon.
There are free Jaws scripts for T-Bird 3.x you can Google them. They make some operations much simpler and quicker.

Interesting, re: some of the flags not reading in T-Bird w/Windows readers. I never get messages with priority anything but 'normal', but can hear 'has attachment' when moving in the message list. This is with Orca, however. In Windows, have you tried messing with the view options, to get some of these other fields read?

Post 18 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Sunday, 01-Aug-2010 19:08:17

Yes, I can get the other flags read, needed to reorganize the view a bit (this is in Windows 7).
With Orca I got the flag read under Ubuntu, which is weird since the explanation given was that the attachment flag could not be implemented in an accessible way due to the underlying platform and this applied both on Windows and Linux.
Priority can be read, but only priority of messages originating from Thunderbird, priority set in Microsoft Outlook do not translate to T-Bird, which is probably just because the Outlook implementation is not open source or standard.
